artist statement
My glass works are composed of
a unique combination with brass, and
made using kiln casting technique. They are characterized by
patterns of dark blue colors. The colors appear as the results of
chemical reactions of glass and brass that occur when they are
melted together at high temperatures. Depending on the melting
conditions, the color depth may change, and black, green, brown
and red may be mixed. For brass, melting next to glass is
a process of corrosion. I am fascinated by complexity and beauty
of the patina-like colors.
I found this unique combination of glass and brass, by applying
my knowledge and experience that I studied solid-state physics
at university. I always imagine microscopically what kind of drama
(that is chemical reaction) will occur at the boundary
between glass and brass.
I want to express the withered and decayed beauty of glass
by this unique combination with brass.
